Why the 3G iPhone launch may be more important than you think.

While most Nokia fans look down on the iPhone, and view the upcoming 3G launch with skepticism, I think it may herald a new way of communicating for US customers.  In Europe and Asia, 3G video calls have been available for quite a while, but here, providers have not offered it.  A year ago, AT&T issued a press release  that they were upgrading their EDGE network in preparation for the new iPhone, this year, they are doing the same for their 3G network.  Everyone knows that they 3G version of the iPhone is mere weeks away, and AT&T claims to have now upgraded thier network to HSPA technology.

Why is this important? HSPA or actually a combination of HSDPA and HSUPA (high speed DOWNLINK packet access and UPLINK packet access respectively).  The uplink is the important part, it will allow you to SEND high speed data from your device at about 800Kbps…and what would be the best use for this?  VIDEO OF COURSE.

Now I’m not claiming to know anything, but this makes me wonder if video calling features will be built into every iPhone version 2.  Hopefully if there is a new video call feature, AT&T is not stupid, and allows it in other devices that can support it, like say, hmmm…the N95 :)   Just a thought.
